Description:
Erroll Garner's midnight concert at Amsterdam's prestigious Concertgebouw in 1964! The "Behind the Beat" charm of Garner's trademark "Behind the Beat" is in full bloom on this 16 piece set of swinging, grooving performances and graceful balladry. Errol Garner's trio with Eddie Calhoun and Kelly Martin was the longest and most powerful trio active from 1958 to 1965. During that time, the trio produced many masterpieces, beginning with "Paris Impressions" for Columbia, "Close Up In Swing" for Philips, "Campus Concert" for MGM, and "One World Concert" for Reprise. This trio was the perfect choice to express the appeal of Garner's "behind-the-beat" style, and it fully demonstrated his strong personality, which had gradually become stronger in touch and tenacity in riding the beat than in the 1950s.The trio first toured abroad in 1963, when a performance at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester was released on the Jazz Groove label. The next European tour was in 1964, also at the Free Trade Hall, and an album of eight songs from the November 7 concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was released on the Philips label as "Amsterdam Concert". The 16 tracks that appeared on this release were also performed on the same day, but since "More" and "Moon River" were not included among the eight tracks on the Philips disc, 10 tracks are previously unreleased material. Although the concert started after 11:00 p.m., the performance was recorded in the middle of the night, and from the opening of the concert, the performance was full of groove and intensity. Garner's one and only personality, "Behind the Beat," has not aged at all, even after several decades, and it still has the sparkle of the moment. On the other hand, the ballad performance is also attractive.Track 4 is a song from the romantic comedy film "A New Kind Of Love," starring Paul Newman, which was performed with an orchestra on the soundtrack, and it is rare to hear this song performed by a trio. This slow ballad, with its beautiful harmonies and flowing touch, is also Garner's true masterpiece. This is the definitive record of an evening full of swing and groove and 16 ballad performances, all of which were wonderful!
