1984 is a dystopian novel by George Orwell, published in 1949. It is set in a totalitarian society ruled by the Party, led by the figurehead Big Brother, where surveillance, propaganda, and mind control are pervasive. The protagonist, Winston Smith, works for the Party but begins to rebel against its oppressive regime. The novel explores themes of government control, truth manipulation, and the loss of individual freedom. It's widely regarded as a powerful critique of authoritarianism and the dangers of a surveillance state.
